zulu nyala-31

In October 2012 Penny and I traveled to South Africa.  Several years ago we purchased a Photo Safari trip at a charity auction.  The trip was 6 days – all inclusive at Zulu Nyala Game Preserve.  The preserve was located in Zulu territory in the Zulu Natal region.  One would hardly travel half-way round the world for a 6 day trip…… so we extended for a week in Cape Town and then returned through London for a few days….. WOW. What a grand experience.

We started our trip by traveling through Hong Kong and then to Johannesburg.  We finished our Trip by returning from Cape Town through London and then  on to Los Angeles….. talk about around the world….. we did it all.

Did not know much about apartheid before the trip…. wow, can you say drinking from a fire hydrant…. almost overwhelming.  It turns out that up to 70% of the population from teens to early thirties are unemployed.. If that upsets you…. consider that 60% of the population falls into that age group…. that is a DISASTER.  If anything can seem  hopeless, I’d call that ……..

So each and every tourist if well intentioned and thoughtful…. adds to the local economy…..good on you!

The Photo Galleries below progress in the same sequence as our trip.  We started in Los Angeles, flew to Hong Kong…. changed planes and then traveled to Johannesburg.  Deplaned and stayed in Jo’berg for 2 nights while we recovered from the 32 hour ordeal of flight, terminals, and further flight.  We then traveled to Richards Bay with a greeting and transport from the Safari Lodge… stayed in the lodge for 3 nights, then transferred to Hemingway style tents for 3 nights.  Had the opportunity to see the BIG 5…. that being the Elephant, Lion, Rhino, Cape Buffalo and finally the Leopard.  We were transported to Durbin where we took our flight to Cape Town…. stayed in Cape Town at the Victoria and Alfred hotel… toured Cape Town and surrounding areas… very lovely, if not emotional due to the apartheid experiences.  Then on to London for some sight seeing. Penny and I have had the opportunity to visit London many times for the Airshows…. we are old hands as they say…. Lot’s of fun…. Saw the play “Lion King” very appropriate due to our Safari.
